Professor Stephen Evans

Hong Kong Polytechnic University

We are deeply saddened to announce the recent passing of Stephen Evans.

Stephen did an undergraduate degree in History at Oxford and then went on to do a PGCE in our department before deciding to follow the English Language Teaching route around the world ending up at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. There he carved out an illustrious career in research in English for Specific Purposes, and in World Englishes. As a historian perhaps he will be best remembered for his meticulous and scholarly research into the history of language policies in post-colonial countries – and of course that of Hong Kong itself.

Stephen came back to his alma mater in 2015 and spent six months in the Department of Education as a visiting scholar. He gave generously of his time to our students in applied linguistics and also offered academic writing sessions to other students in the department. Stephen was a wonderful colleague to have around and we will remember him with great affection.

Ernesto Macaro, Victoria Murphy, Heath Rose, Robert Woore, Jessica Briggs, Julie Dearden.
