Alan Dobson

A graduate of the University of Manchester (BA, MA), Alan Dobson took the Diploma in Education at the Oxford Department of Education. He subsequently acquired his doctorate at the University of Birmingham.

Alan was the HMI District Inspector for Oxfordshire 1985-1991. Formerly a teacher of languages, he was the senior HMI for foreign languages 1991-2002. He now works as a consultant in the evaluation of language projects in the UK and abroad, for example with British Council. He has worked closely with the Council of Europe over many years and was involved in the early development of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages and the European Language Portfolio (ELP).

Alan believes strongly in the value of networking. He considers the OES network could play a significant part in strengthening the links between research and teaching. For example, teachers have a role in identifying specific themes for research to inform teaching and learning. On the other hand, researchers need more often to channel relevant results of research to the classroom, for example by identifying publications or data of specific interest to teachers who do not have the time or resources to search for these.
